I love decorating and making the house pretty, not only for Christmas. But Christmas is a great excuse to go all out…

To make sure our table looks different every year, I use different elements and ornaments. The basis, my tableware, remains the same, but the rest changes every year; a different colour, a different feel!

Because the holidays are usually quite busy, I love ‘quick makeovers’. You don’t need a sewing machine (!), only fabric, scissors (serrated scissors), a crochet hook and some yarn… You’re ready to get started!

How to for: ‘Christmas in 5 minutes’! (or a little longer…)
6 quick decorating tips; easy to do, but fun!

1. Table cloth
A tablecloth can really add something to your table. It gives a good colour base, and you can choose a colour that suits your tableware and the occasion. Here I used a 100 x 140 cm piece of byClaire fabric as a tablecloth.

I love gingham and this blue-white version looks really great with our lovely blue and white plates, which are part of the service my husband inherited.

Cut around with the serrated scissors, to stop the fabric from fraying. (If you have time, you can sew a seam all the way around.)

2. Flowers
At Christmas, I just have to have flowers on the table. Not a large centrepiece, but small bouquets of flowers next to each plate look very festive.

Use small vases or tea cups, those with the gilded rims, a floral design or Delft cups. And what about attaching a small candle clip onto the ear of the cup?

This makes the cup a vase and candle holder in one!

3. Napkins
Linen napkins just breathe luxury. But you can also make your own napkins! You can use a fabric matching your plates, or a contrasting colour, for a cheerful accent!

Cut 40 x 40 cm squares using serrated scissors. Quick and easy napkins, that won’t fray…

You don’t need a sewing machine needed and have a lovely table in no time. Got some time to spare? Then sew a seam all the way around.

4. Napkin garland
For formal dinners, you can use napkin rings. Here, I made garlands for the napkins.

By crocheting them in green, they look like green twigs with red and pink berries when you wrap them around the napkin!

Attach a small ornament and you’re done: a perfect, glittery Christmas plate!

How to make the garland

Materials

Crochet hook 3mm
Colours and yarn: byClaire no 1
Garland: Jade 2141
Berries and leaf: Ocean green 2138, fuchsia 236, Red 216

Garland
Start with the basic garland. The berries/leaves are added later.
Repeat the following pattern until your garland is around 30 cm.

  • ch 6.
  • Leaf: ch 5, sl st in the first ch.

Once the garland is done, you add the berries/leaves. These are worked immediately into the garland, one group on either sides of the garland. Make 1 small berry in red and 2 leaves right beside it. Start with the leaves and add the red berry in between.

Leaf (2 x): 1 x in pink, 1 x in ocean green

Insert your hook in the same ch as where you made a green leaf. Work this leaf on the other side of the garland (see the blue leaves in the diagram).Work ch 7, sl st in the first ch.

Berry
Work a berry in between the leaves.
Start with ch 3. 1 sl st in the first ch.

You can make a small knot in the ends and cut the ends.

5. Fabric ribbons
I have added extra ‘green’ decoration to the chairs. Attach 2 or 3 small pine branches to the chair with a piece of ribbon. You can buy ready-made ribbon or cut it yourself from your favourite fabric.

Cut strips of approx. 2 cm with serrated scissors. Keep the strips nice and long and tie into a bow. This way, they seem to sweep along the back of the chair. Super simple, but it looks great! (You can also decorate the lamp over the dining table or edges of dresser this way.)

6. Crocheted pendants
Last but not least, a sweet little detail… To really finish off the ‘green’ chair decoration, add a bit of twinkle. It’s quick and easy to make.

Crochet a chain, with a small leaf, to attach a small Christmas ornament.

Materials:
Crochet hook 3 mm
Colour and yarn: byClaire No 1 Sky Blue 282

You can make the chain as long or short as you want.

Start with ch 18. Make a small leaf by working ch 9 and a sl st in the first ch.

Work 3 ch.

Thread through the Christmas ornament. Sl st in the first ch, cut the yarn and tie a small knot.

We will be setting the table for 9 this Christmas. We still have to test some recipes… but the table decorations are ready, all in white and blue, with pink and red accents.

I would like to wish you a great Christmas, and have fun decorating!

Love Claire
